The Great Commission is a TEACHING as well as PREACHING commission!

Mt 28:19-20 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (NAS) Teach them all I commanded you.

Did you know that Jesus gave us 50 commandments to take to the nations?

The 50 commandments of Christ will change a nation. Notice how Jesus commands us to both preach repentance and TEACH THEM TO “OBSERVE ALL THINGS THAT I COMMANDED YOU”. We tend to focus on getting people saved, or born again. That is certainly the start. This however is called the “Gospel of Salvation.”

The “Gospel of the Kingdom” on the other hand is the Gospel we are called to preach. It includes the call to repentance but goes much further. It 7 Mountains of Culture reaches into the world system and threatens Satan’s control over the nations. It is a teaching commission along side a preaching commission. It has been neglected too long.

To disciple a nation you need a philosophy that governs all aspects of behavior yet is flexible enough to apply to all sectors of society. What are the sectors of society the gospel must penetrate in order to disciple nations?

There are in fact seven mountains or world kingdoms that make up the matrix in which the culture of every nation exists. These mountains are also called “mind molders”, because the person who controls the tops of these mountains has leverage over the minds and lives of those beneath in every other mountain. The church has a message for each of these mountains. We need to both demonstrate the power of God and recover our confidence in the practical, life changing dynamic that is unleashed when society is built on non optional universal life principles- the commandments of Christ! It is the absence of this moral foundation that explains why it is easier to liberate a country from dictatorship than it is to bring it into order and prosperity once the dictator is out of power.

Schedule For The Day

Devotional prayer and worship (8-9 a.m.): This optional time invites you to come early and sit in the presence of the Lord. There will be live music for this personal devotional set. Grab a cup of coffee and Bible, and begin your retreat!

Session One (9 — 12 noon): Drawing close to the presence of the Lord — practical teachings to equip you in the secret place.

In this session, we will focus on three topics.

* Encountering Jesus

First, we will take time to learn how to encounter Jesus. We will discuss how to practice “His Presence” throughout the day. Encountering Jesus is something that we can learn to do, and it will affect our lives forever.

* How to read and pray the Bible

Did you know that while you read the Word – you can actually interact with Jesus? In this session we will learn many different practical ways to read and pray your Bible.

* Listening for His Voice

Also during this time we will practice deeper encounter with the “voice of God.” We will teach you to hear the voice of God by using the techniques that have been very successful in the 0 to 5 year old group. You will leave this session empowered to meet God daily.

** Lunch Break and free time for fellowship, a walk along the trail, or some quiet time. Lunch provided; please let us know you’ll be here! **

Session Two (2-5 p.m.): The essence of the secret place

In this session we will talk about our secret place in God, and what it means to truly abide with God. Only you have the ability to love God the way that you can. We will learn how to meet with God and minster back to Him in the secret place of our hearts… that place where you go where it’s just you and God.

** Dinner Break ** Provided! Please sign up in advance. This is a great time to get to know each other better. There will be a special gathering of prayer leaders during this time. Anyone can join in if interested in seeing what God is doing in our city! UVa students are encouraged to gather to exchange ideas about God’s move on grounds!

Session Three (7-10 p.m.): The Awakening!

In our prayer times concerning this day, several of our prayer team discerned the need for a real awakening among believers, that the Bride of Christ would be awakened to her Beloved! In this session, we will see how God awakened His people throughout history, and how He is doing that today! Don’t miss this evening session, as we will also have deep times in worship, prayer and prophetic encouragement from Benjamin.

I am writing this email to you while in Maui Hawaii on a two week vacation with my wife Julia. Yes, I’m actually taking time off from other things I could be doing on this gorgeous island to encourage and inspire you.

For years, going to Hawaii was a pipe dream for me – something I would do some day. Finally, it became a reality. And journaling played a key role in that. I came here to support Julia, who qualified for the Xterra World Triathlon Championship that took place on Oct 25. And believe it or not, it was actually a big step of faith for me to drop most everything I was doing to come here for two weeks of R&R.

On October 12, I wrote a devotional titled “The LORD is doing a marvelous work in me to SIMPLIFY my life.” SIMPLIFY is my keyword for life. In that I wrote, “While journaling early in the morning on Sept 22, the day after my arrival in Utah for our vacation, the LORD told me to free up my Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays to give me a 4 day weekend every week to allow me much more time for rest, reflection, revelation, prayer, and meditation on the Word of God. My goal is to be STRATEGIC and create MARGIN to bear much fruit for the Kingdom.”

So what? What does this have to do with YOU and Pray Culpeper?

Lots! God is raising the bar for His children to pray and intercede much more – that includes YOU as well as me. God sent me to Utah in late September to rest, reflect, and receive His revelation to free up three days each work week to ABIDE and PRAY.

What is the significance of the number 12 in Biblical numerology?
What is the significance of today’s message for you to breakthrough?

In Biblical numerology, the number “12″ represents the apostolic. According to the Christian Apologetics and Research Ministry (CARM), 12 is “THE NUMBER OF GOVERNMENTAL PERFECTION. There were 12 tribes of Israel; 12 Apostles, 12 foundations in the heavenly Jerusalem; 12 gates; 12 pearls; 12 angels. The measurements of New Jerusalem are 12,000 furlongs or stadia, while the wall will be 144 (12 x 12) cubits.”

Let me share a recent extraordinary story about the number 12 and the Angel Breakthrough.

On Saturday June 6, 2009, I hosted my very first live Web Marketing Intensive Training seminar at the Holiday Inn Express in Culpeper, Virginia. What happened there was extraordinary. Afterwards, Julia (my wife) and I went for a 24 mile (= 12 x 2) bike ride. During that ride, the LORD told me to ask Bob Sims to sow a $14,400 (= 12 x $1,200) financial seed to provide the funding to allow all of our MTC (Marching Through Culpeper) prayer team members to participate in our first 12-week quick start Web 2.0 program.

During my morning quiet time on June 8, 2009, I spent four hours writing a long two-way prayer and then composing a lengthy email to Bob Sims asking him to sow an UNCOMMON financial seed ($14,400) by June 12 to help our prayer team breakthrough with the Marching Through Culpeper movie project. It turned out my email to Bob had about twelve “12′s” in it.

Meanwhile, while I was composing that email to Bob, he was sending his own email with an audio file titled “Breakthrough.” That was the first time Bob has ever emailed me an audio file and neither of us knew what the other was doing. Neither of us knew what the other was doing.

The audio file “breakthrough” happened to be 12 minutes long. Bob Jones, the speaker on the audio file started,

“A week ago Friday I was in Nashville and I went and laid down at 3 o-clock. And I no sooner laid down and I was in what I call a trance. And I was waiting on a road and 12 men were coming toward me and I could see that they were angels. But one was in front of the others. And the one that was in front came up to me and said ‘My name is Breakthrough.’”

Here are some things the “BREAKTHROUGH” angel said that jumped out at me:
1) “I’m going to move among the common people” (bloggers)
2) “If you do what I tell you, we are going to bring many into the Kingdom”
3) “I use tools!” (Web 2.0)
4) “His angels are like winds. I believe he said Move, Move, Move. It is 3 cities that are ready.”
5) “It’s America’s time for breatkthrough. Study about breakthrough in scripture. Most of the breakthroughs come through praise.”
6) “It’s now.” .. It’s time the Body of Christ quits being observers and becomes participaters.

Prayer Power
Heavenly Father, thank You for Bob Sim’s extraordinary faith and obedience. Thank You for the audio file he sent me about the Angel Breakthrough. Thank You for his $14,400 seed sown on June 12 that You will multiply 100 fold. May those who visit this web page sit before You to reflect upon today’s message. Bless them with ears to hear and eyes to see what You are revealing to them to do to break through in their own lives. Thank You Jesus. In Your name I pray. Amen and hallelujah!

Prayer Power (Mon, June 8, 2009)

Randy, I want you to start your morning by listening to I AM – 365 Names of God to remind you not just who I AM, but who you are in Me. I want your faith to increase. I have brought you to this point so that you have to ask for help from people who I want to partner with you. Nana will want to sow into your life and Julia’s life. It’s Ok to ask her. She sees Me through you. She wants you to be richly blessed. She believes in what you are doing. Likewise, Bob will want to sow into what you are doing. He understands Me. He knows I AM a supernatural God and that My ways are so much higher than the world’s ways and that My thoughts are so much higher than the world’s thoughts. Bob can see God working through you. As a visionary for visionaries and a forerunner of forerunners, Bob understands how I ask my Jedi Knights to do unusual and extraordinary things. Bob will want to partner with you financially. He understands Kingdom economics, which always trump world economics. My yield is 30-60-100 fold, not 5-10%. Randy, write down Proverbs 3:3-10 that Tim Smith read yesterday while on stage at SPC. That was for you.

Let not mercy and truth forsake you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart, And so find favor and high esteem In the sight of God and man. Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the LORD and depart from evil. It will be health to your flesh, And strength to your bones. Honor the LORD with your possessions, And with the firstfruits of all your increase; So your barns will be filled with plenty, And your vats will overflow with new wine. (Proverbs 3:3-10)

These verses will minister to Bob’s spirit. They will speak life into him. They will help him understand what I AM asking him to do. When Bob sows his financial seed, that will be the blowing of the shofar for the fourth time. When Nana sows her seed, that will be the blowing of the shofar for the fifth time. Saturday June 6 was the blowing of My shofar for the third time. The Web Marketing Intensive Training Seminar you led was profound. I completely redirected your paths. What you did is duplicatable and saleable. I AM creating a system for you, Randy, to help My children share their God stories, products, and services with the world. Bob’s seed will allow you to invite in all MTC prayer team members. Just teaching your tribe members how to use affiliate marketing alone will result in much, much recurring financial income. As Tim said yesterday, please put up a roadblock whenever I start to stray off Your path of life. May people see Your glory and Your majesty through me. May I be completely transparent so that nothing hinders your full manifestation through me. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done today, June 8, 2009. To You be all glory, honor, and praise. I love You with every fiber of my being. Thank You for being my friend in addition to my LORD, King, and Master. Thank You for being the Comforter of my soul. And that reminds me of how you sent me to Holy Comforter School for grades 1-3 in Charlottesville and how Mrs. Cox, my second grade teacher, helped me get on the right path academically. She was the teacher who first manifest the love of God to me in school. Thank You for Mrs. Cox. Bless her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Jesus, I am overwhelmed by Your presence.

Dear Bob,

Jesus has given my a crystal clear instruction to ask you to sow a $14,400 seed to become a financial and covenant partner with Empower 2000 and JIREH Marketing (Jerry and Sharon Graham’s parent company). Your seed will form a triad of Kingdom-minded companies to storm the gates of hell.

Attached is my 2-way prayer with Jesus from this morning which will minister to your spirit and bring clarity. The LORD actually told me in my spirit to ask you to sow this UNCOMMON seed on Saturday June 6 while I was riding my bike 24 miles with Julia about seven hours after the Web Marketing Intensive Training Seminar was over. He told me again several times on Sunday June 7.

I have an urgent financial need that require both faith and mercy on the part of the sower. By Friday June 12 at the latest, I must have at least $3,000 more in my personal checking account to pay two automatic withdrawals, $1,733 to my home mortgage company and $3,000 to the IRS. Julia and I are desperate for a financial miracle. Julia has been such a trooper for the LORD through the extreme financial hardships we have experienced during the past year.

Some history is in order.

As you already know, I committed my life to Jesus on January 6, 2001 (Epiphany Sunday), 2000 years after Jesus was born. I knew the very moment I made that monumental decision that my life purpose was to be the greatest salesman in the world for the Word of God. This came on the heels of the Holy Spirit leading me to read “The Greatest Salesman in the World” book during 2000. I actually read each of the ten scrolls 3x per day for 30 days (90 times per month) over the course of 10 months (Feb-Nov 2000) to the point I had the entire book memorized. I have never done anything like that before or since.

Knowing my life purpose has been what has kept me going through all the trials and tribulations associated with such a great assignment. It’s what has led me to give all I have to those in need as the Holy Spirit has directed me. It’s been what has kept me from going back to do anesthesia to provide for my family.

In April 2001, I got connected to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes after being invited to their annual banquet in Fredericksburg, VA. That led me to volunteer to help me the local FCA huddle in Culpeper. It turned out the very first FCA huddle (student group meeting) I ever went to in my life took place on the morning of Sept 12, 2001, the day after 9-11. My daughter showed up out-of-the-blue. Less than two weeks later she committed her life to Christ and was transformed miraculously from a selfish teenager to a beautiful young lady.

On January 1, 2007, the first day of my sabbatical year and my 21 day fast, the Holy Spirit told me to ask 12 people to sow a $14,400 seed into Empower 2000 to keep me from having to tap my IRA. When I asked my parents, they agreed to do that, albeit reluctantly. When I asked Michael Stay, he turned down the opportunity. When I asked Patti May, no seed was sown. Those “no’s” took the wind out of my sails to ask others.

Incidentally, I first got connected to Patti on Jan 1, 2007 when I serendipitously called together a group of Pray Culpeper members to meet in a downtown Culpeper building adjacent to the post office to dedicate a suite to be a prayer sanctuary for our community. Hi Bob,

This morning while I was laying in bed reflecting, the LORD told me to re-send my 2-way prayer from yesterday to you this morning, but this time to include it directly in the email instead of as an attachment.

After getting up, I came downstairs, knelt down and prayed a few minutes. Then I came to my desk to journal. I was planning to listen to Genesis 49-50 (Jacob’s blessing on Joseph), but when I maximized iTunes, I noticed “Breakthrough Revival (prophecy),” the MP3 file you sent me yesterday, happened to be at the very top of my iTunes window I had opened. The Holy Spirit prompted me to listen to that again.

Here is how Bob Jones starts, “A week ago Friday I was in Nashville and I went and laid down at 3 o-clock. And I no sooner laid down and I was in what I call a trance. And I was waiting on a road and 12 men were coming toward me and I could see that they were angels. But one was in front of the others. And the one that was in front came up to me and said ‘My name is Breakthrough.’”

Nashville might well be the most spiritually warm city in America.

Here are some things the “BREAKTHROUGH” angel said that jumped out at me:
1) “I’m going to move among the common people” (bloggers)
2) “If you do what I tell you, we are going to bring many into the Kingdom”
3) “I use tools!”
4) “His angels are like winds. I believe he said Move, Move, Move. It is 3 cities that are ready.”
5) “It’s America’s time for breatkthrough. Study about breakthrough in scripture. Most of the breakthroughs come through praise.”
6) “It’s now.” .. It’s time the Body of Christ quits being observers and becomes participaters.

The web is the number one business tool available. Ted Baehr, the founder of Movie Guide, uses this for his email signature, “He controls the media controls the culture.” Since the web is the most powerful type of media on the planet now, Ted’s statement can be boiled down to “He who controls the web controls the culture.”

We know the number “12″ in Biblical numerology represents the apostolic. Yesterday I spent 4 hours in the Holy of holies composing the email I sent you. This morning while reviewing that, I noticed the frequency of the number 12 in that email

Where were you on 9-11 when the planes crashed into the terrorist targets?

What will you do today and this weekend to honor those who died and those who risk their lives to protect yours every day?

Today, as I write this message, I’m filled with sorrow. I intensely feel the pain of those who lost loved ones in the horrible terrorist attacks that took place on that fateful day of Sept 11, 2009.

According to Wikipedia, “Early in the morning on September 11, 2001, nineteen hijackers took control of four commercial airliners en route to San Francisco and Los Angeles from Boston, Newark, and Washington, D.C. (Washington Dulles International Airport). At 8:46 a.m., American Airlines Flight 11 was crashed into the World Trade Center’s North Tower, followed by United Airlines Flight 175 which hit the South Tower at 9:03 a.m. Another group of hijackers flew American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon at 9:37 a.m. A fourth flight, United Airlines Flight 93, whose ultimate target was thought to be either the United States Capitol or White House, crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania at 10:03 a.m, after the passengers on board engaged in a fight with the hijackers.”

When the first plane crashed into the World Trade Center’s (WTC) North Tower, I was on my knees praying with Pastor Mark Jarvis in his office at Open Door Baptist Church. I distintly remember one of the church staff members running into the office to tell us what happened and to look at the TV.

It turned out that my brother’s life was spared that day, but one of his estate planning clients was on the very first plane that crashed into the WTC North Tower.

Larry has worked as an estate planning attorney in Manhattan for about 15 years now. It so happened that in 2001 he was doing estate planning work for a Jewish attorney on Tuesdays in the North Tower. All other days of the week, he worked in mid-town Manhattan. On 9-11, my brother didn’t go to work because his Jewish boss had flown to Texas for some meeting there.

Larry lives in Glenridge NJ and was referred by one of his neighbors to do estate planning work for a lady who lived in Rhode Island or Massachusetts. She met with Larry in the North Tower shortly before 9-11 to ask him to help with estate planning for her husband who was dying from terminal cancer. On 9-11 she boarded Flight 11 in Boston with her 5 or 6 year old child intending to fly to CA. However, she ended up crashing into the same building she had met my brother in.

In 2001, I had been praying faithfully every day for my family and God honored those prayers.

On Wednesday Sept 12, 2001, I went to my very first FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) huddle of my life. What happened was extraordinary. See “The Impact of the FCA on My Life.”

Yesterday, Bahama Bob shared with me his shocking 9-11 story and asked me to post an audio recording of the story which I did. Through an exraordinary sequence of events, Bob actually flew in a small plane from Maine to Boston with Mohammad Atta, the ringleader of the 19 hijackers, who was flying to Boston to hijack Flight 11. If you don’t believe in God or angels, Bob’s story might well change your mind and heart.

Prayer Power
Heavenly Father, forgive us in this nation for allowing prayer and the Bible to be removed from much of public life. Forgive us for all the idols we have allowed into our lives that prevent us from putting you first in all areas of our lives. Restore a culture of prayer in our homes, businesses, and communities. May we reform our ways and our actions and obey the Lord our God. Thank You for all the brave men and women who put their lives on the line to protect us on a daily basis. May you bless in a very special way today the families and friends of those who lost loved ones eight years ago on 9-11. Thank You Jesus. Amen.

Yesterday, I went to the monthly “Christ In Culpeper” (Prayer Culpeper) meeting at the Culpeper Train Depot. Eight prayer warriors were there initially and one more joined us before we finished. The presence of God was very strong.

While we were praying I saw a vision of a large waterwheel dipping down into the water (God’s living water) and bringing water up to people waiting in the window above. Many, many people are so thirsty for God’s living waters.

Also while we were praying, the Holy Spirit impressed upon my heart strongly to resume weekly prayer meetings. When I got home, I found a letter (article) in the mail from Burt Swardstrom titled “Prayer Revival In America.” Burt is Director of Communications (Prayer Coordinator) for Mastermedia International.

As I was reading that article (see below), I knew with absolutely certainly that I am to start a noon-time weekly prayer meeting in Culpeper in which business people can meet for prayer that will rapidly evolve into daily prayer meeting all over our community. Prayer and faith go hand-in-hand. Prayer and love for Jesus go hand-in-hand.

I feel so deeply the pain of broken hearts and broken families in our community. PRAYER IS THE ANSWER. There is no revival without prayer. The only way a city will be transformed is when pulpit and marketplace leaders come together regularly to pray. That is foundational to every great revival.

Jeremiah Lamphier held his first prayer meeting in a Reformation Church in New York City on Wednesday September 23, 1857. Within weeks, hundreds of people were gathering to pray. It’s interesting that in 2009, September 23 is also a Wednesday.

Late yesterday afternoon, I spoke with Brad Hales, pastor of Reformation Lutheran Church in downtown Culpeper. He has agreed to allow his sanctuary to be used for prayer time on Wednesdays at Noon. So we will start weekly prayer meetings from Noon – 1 pm on Wed, September 2.

Heavenly Father, we praise You as the God of prayer, the God of revival. Thank You for stirring my heart to begin weekly prayer meetings in downtown Culpeper starting Sept 2. I’m expecting an explosion in faith and God-centeredness. May Your Holy Spirit send the invitations to people’s hearts to come. Thank You Jesus!

1857 Prayer Revival in America

A quiet, zealous forty-six-year-old businessman in New York was appointed on July 1,1857 , as a missionary in downtown New York at the Dutch Church. Jeremiah Lamphier had been converted in 1842 in Broadway Tabernacle, Finney’s church that was built in 1836.

Lamphier felt led by God to start a noon-time weekly prayer meeting in which business people could meet for prayer. Anyone could attend, for a few minutes or for the entire hour. Prayers were to be comparatively brief. Lamphier’s group met on the third floor of the old North Dutch Reformed Church on Fulton Street in New York. Lamphier printed some handbills announcing the prayer meetings with the title, “How Often Should I Pray?” He left these in some offices and warehouses. He also put one on the door of the church on the street side.

The first day, September 23, 1857, Lamphier prayed alone for half an hour. But by the end of the hour, six men from at least four denominational backgrounds joined him. The next Wednesday there were twenty. On October 7 there were nearly forty. The meeting was so blessed that they decided to meet daily. One week later there were over one hundred present, including many unsaved who were convicted by the Holy Spirit of their sin.

Within one month pastors who had attended the noon prayer meetings in Fulton Street started morning prayer meetings in their own churches. Soon the places where the meetings were held were overcrowded. Men and women, young and old of all denominations met and prayed together without distinctions. The meetings abounded with love for Christ, love for fellow Christians, love for prayer, and love of witnessing. Those in attendance felt an awesome sense of God’s presence. They prayed for specific people, expected answers, and obtained answers.

Newspapers began to report on the meetings and the unusual spirit of prayer that was evident. Within three months similar meetings had sprung up across America. Thousands began praying in these services and in their own homes. I n New York, gospel tracts were distributed to those in attendance, with instructions that they pray over the tracts and then give them to someone God brought to mind.

The three rooms at the Fulton Street Church were filled beyond capacity, and hundreds had to go to other places. By early February a nearby Methodist Church was opened, and it immediately overflowed. The balconies were filled with ladies. By March 19 a theater opened for prayer, and half an hour before it was time to begin, people were turned away. Hundreds stood outside in the streets because they could not get inside. By the end of March over six thou- sand people met daily in prayer gatherings in New York City. Many churches added evening services for prayer. Soon there were 150 united prayer meetings each day across Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Meetings began in February in Philadelphia. Soon Jayne’s Hall was overfilled, and meetings were held at noon each day in public halls, concert halls, fire stations, houses, and tents. The whole city exuded a spirit of prayer.

PRAYER MEETING FERVOR

Almost simultaneously noon prayer meetings sprang up all across America in Boston, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Richmond, Charleston, Savannah, Mobile, New Orleans, Vicksburg, Memphis, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago, and in a multitude of other cities, towns, and in rural areas. By the end of the fourth month, prayer fervor burned intensely across the nation. It was an awesome but glorious demonstration of the sovereign working of the Holy Spirit and the eager obedience of God’s people.

America had entered a new period of faith and prayer. Educated and uneducated, rich and poor, business leaders and common workmen-all prayed, believed, and received answers to prayer. Even the president of the United States, Franklin Pierce, attended many of the noon prayer meetings. This was not a revival of powerful preaching. This was a movement of earnest, powerful, prevailing prayer.

All people wanted was a place to pray. Sinners would come and ask for prayer. Someone would individually pray for them, and in minutes the newly saved person was rejoicing in Christ. Prayers would be asked by name for unconverted friends and loved ones from allover the country. In a day or two, testimonies would be given of how the prayers had already been answered. In some towns, nearly the entire population became saved.

Six months previous to Lamphier’s prayer meeting boom, few would have gathered for a prayer service. But now a spirit of prayer occupied the land, as though the church had suddenly discovered its real power. The majority of the churches in most denominations experienced a new dimension of prayer. The Presbyterian Magazine reported that as of May there had been fifty thousand converts of the revival. In February, a New York Methodist magazine reported a total of eight thousand conversions in Methodist meetings in one week. The Louisville daily paper reported seventeen thousand Baptist conversions in three weeks during the month of March. And according to a June statement, the conversion figures stood at 96,216–and still counting. all but two of the youth in one high school were saved. A similar event took place in Toledo, Ohio. These are just brief examples of what was happening constantly all across the nation.

The accounts of the prayer meetings during those revival years describe how the people would quietly gather at the place of prayer promptly at the appointed hour. Whoever was leader for the meeting—a layman or a minister— arose and announced a hymn. They sang one or two verses with great joy, the leader prayed briefly, and then turned the service over to the members. Any person was free to speak or pray for no longer than five minutes. If the person took more than that time, a small bell was rung and it was someone else’s turn.

Requests for prayer, often coming from distant places, were spoken or read. Often sinners arose and requested prayer for themselves. Members gave testimonies of answers to prayer, and the people praised the Lord. Brief exhortations on prayer or revival were allowed but limited to five minutes. Many testified of revival progress in various locations. Promptly at the closing of the hour the leader rose and pronounced the benediction, and the people quietly left the building. Occasionally someone might stay behind to pray with a spiritual seeker.

THE INVISIBLE CLOUD OF GOD’S PRESENCE

A canopy of holy and awesome revival influence—in reality the presence of the Holy Spirit—seemed to hang like an invisible cloud over many parts of the United States, especially over the eastern seaboard. At times this cloud of God’s presence even seemed to extend out to sea. Those on ships approaching the east coast at times felt a solemn, holy influence, even one hundred miles away, without even knowing what was happening in America.

Revival began aboard one ship before it reached the coast. People on board began to feel the presence of God and a sense of their own sinfulness. The Holy Spirit convicted them, and they began to pray. As the ship neared the harbor, the captain signaled, “Send a minister.” Another small commercial ship arrived in port with the captain, and every member of the crew converted in the last 150 miles. Ship after ship arrived with the same story: both passengers and crew were suddenly convicted of sin and turned to Christ before they reached the American coast.

The battleship North Carolina was anchored in New York harbor as a naval receiving ship. More than a thousand young men were on board. Four Christians agreed to meet together for prayer and knelt on the lower deck. The Spirit of God so filled their hearts with joy that they broke into song. Ungodly men on the top deck heard the singing, looked down, and saw the boys kneeling. They began running down the stairs, mocking and jeering. The convicting power of the Holy Spirit so gripped them that by the time they reached the bottom deck they fell on their knees and began crying for mercy.

Strong men who were deep in sin were broken down by the Spirit’s power and knelt humbly in penitence and faith. Night after night the sailors prayed, and hundreds were converted on the ship. Ministers were sent for, and they came out from shore to help in the gracious work of the Spirit. The battleship became a mighty center of revival. Converts of the movement, completing their periods of training, were sent out to other navy ships. Wherever they went revival fires were kindled in other naval vessels.

IN HOMES, SHOPS, FIELDS, AND CHURCHES

Reports came in of hundreds being converted in prayer meetings, private homes, workshops, and fields. Often the doors of businesses held signs reading, ” Closed, will reopen at the close of the prayer meeting.” Five prayer meetings took place daily in Washington, D.C. Five thousand or so attended daily services in the Academy of Music Hall.

In Philadelphia, Jayne’s Hall removed partitions and added space for six thousand people to attend daily meetings. At this time George Duffield wrote the hymn “Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus.” For months multitudes of churches opened every evening for prayer, and some of them had from three to five services of prayer each day. All were filled. The services consisted of simple prayer, confession, exhortation, and singing. But it was ” so earnest, so solemn, the silence. ..so awful, the singing. ..so over-powering” that the meetings were unforgettable. A canvas tent was erected for outdoor meetings, and it immediately filled with people. In four months’ time, a total of 150,000 people attended the ministry in the tent, with many conversions. Philadelphia churches reported five thousand converts.

The Presbyterians in Northern Ireland heard of the awakening in Philadelphia and sent fraternal delegates. These delegates returned to their homeland and reported what they had seen, and the revival broke out in Ireland, spreading across the British Isles.

REVIVAL IN THE ARMY

Because of the bitter tensions of the Civil War and the slavery issue, for a time it seemed that the southern states would not be as powerfully influenced by the revival as the northern ones had been. Others dispute this assumption. An unusually powerful revival broke out among the southern troops stationed around Richmond, Virginia, in the autumn of 1861. It began in the hospitals among the wounded men and then spread into the camps as these men returned to active duty. Prayer meetings were organized and hundreds converted. The movement spread rapidly throughout the army, reaching the troops of Tennessee and Arkansas.

Revival was encouraged by Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson, who were well known as devout Christians. By the mid-summer of 1863 the revival had spread through all the Confederate armies, and thousands of men had been converted. Chaplains and lay missionaries went out among the troops, preaching and distributing tracts and dealing personally with hungry hearts. By the end of the war at least 150,000 soldiers had been converted, and more than a third of all of the southern troops had become praying men. The revival among the southern troops was primarily a revival of prayer, as the earlier revival in the North had been. While the best estimates are that 6.6 percent of the entire population of the United States was converted during the revival, the percentage among the southern troops was 21 percent. The North really did not win the war—prayer and a mighty revival did!

“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you” (Luke 6:38, NIV).

Like Bill Gates of today, John D. Rockefeller was the wealthiest man of his generation. When John was asked what was the secret of his financial success, he gave a profoundly simple answer – he followed the 10-10-80 principle. John gave the first 10% of what he earned to God, the next 10% to savings, and then he lived within his means on the remaining 80%.

By giving God our “first fruits”, we acknowledge Him as the owner of all and show we trust Him. This act of giving with a cheerful heart releases the promise of God that “our barns will be filled with plenty” (Proverbs 3:9-10). In other words, when You give God the first and best of what You have, He will bless the remainder. This applies not only to our money, but also to our time and talent. The LORD is our Redeemer.

The second part of the 10-10-80 principle is saving. In America, we now have a culture of debt – people are in debt and so are our governments. In Japan the average savings for a worker is more than 20%. In Western Europe it’s about 16%. But in the United States, the average worker saves minus 2%. Covetousness leads to financial bondage, which leads to spiritual bondage. The Bible says that “the borrower is servant to the lender.”

It’s interesting that when immigrants come to our country, they often do a much better job at saving than people who have lived in America for all their lives, despite the fact that they often earn far less.

Prayer Power
Father, when we follow Your principles, life works, and when we don’t, it doesn’t. Forgive me and my family for our past covetousness. Thank You that we are now able to give generously to Your Kingdom work. Help us to do a better job at saving. Set us free from all debt, including our home mortgage. Bless the readers of this message to be able to follow the 10-10-80 principle and to teach others to do likewise. Thank You Jesus for the power of prayer in Your name. Amen.

“Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.” (Matthew 1:23)

What is more glorious in life than the moment someone invites Jesus into their heart?

Today is Christmas, a day Christians around the world celebrate the birth of Jesus. While we don’t know even the actual month Jesus was born, we pay special tribute this day to the King of kings and LORD of lords.

For the individual, true Christmas begins the moment he sincerely invites Jesus into his heart! There is no greater joy than surrendering your life to Jesus because it’s at precisely that moment that the Holy Spirit takes up permanent residence in you and “God with us” becomes personal.

Early yesterday morning while I was journaling, Patti May called me out-of-the-blue. This was the first time we had talked in several months. The first thing Patti told me is “Randy, we have to get America saved!” That got my attention.

She then went on to share her amazing story, the first 16 minutes of which is recorded online at today’s Link of the Day. While Patti has always been fervent for Jesus since I first met her two years ago, she’s red hot on fire for Jesus now.

So what happened? A few months ago, Patti got involved with the Great Awakening. Since then, Patti has personally led hundreds and perhaps thousands of people to the Lord. In the year prior to that, she didn’t lead anyone to Jesus, which is the norm for most Christians.

Patti shared that five years ago, Pastor Rodney Howard Brown’s daughter died at Christmas. He responded by saying, “OK devil, that’s it. A BILLION SOULS. I gave you my best gift, God, and now the devil is going to pay.” That began one of the greatest soul-winning campaigns in the history of America.

Through her connections with Pastor Brown, Patti convinced him to bring the Great Awakening training to VIRGINIA on January 15-17, just a few days before the Presidential inauguration. Word of Life in Loudoun County will be the host church. For more details, see today’s Link of the Day. Jack Stagman, the most active person I know in the spiritual transformation of Virginia, is strongly supporting this. It’s interesting that Jack also lost his daughter at Christmas time a few years ago (in a car accident).

Prayer Power
Jesus, You said in Luke 19:10 that Your purpose in coming to earth was “to seek and to save that which was lost.” That’s what Christmas is about – sharing the love and light of You with those around us. Thank You for bringing the Great Awaking training to Virginia on January 15-17, 2009. May many pastors and Christian leaders choose to participate. In Baltimore, Maryland, 1195 individuals were trained and we saw 20,658 decisions for Jesus Christ. In Phoenix, Arizona, 2630 harvesters were trained and 46,541 individuals made decisions for Jesus Christ. In December 2008, The Great Awakening Tour was in West Palm Beach, Florida and trained 895 men, women and children how to effectively share Christ with others. As a result, over 31,600 precious people called upon the name of the Lord.

Come be a part of this Power Evangelism event and watch what God will do through you and through your church. Following the Power Evangelism class, the Great Awakening Tour team will take the class out into the highways and byways to compel the lost and dying to come to Jesus.

The second week of heat sheltering is drawing to a close. I have found it to be a wonderful blessing. I’m also noticing that our members are walking around with our heads held a little higher, knowing that we are doing the Lord’s work together in such a wonderful way. Given all the controversy in our denomination, that’s not a bad things for us Episcopalians!

Anyhow – here’s how the program has worked here at St. Stephen’s this past week.

I started Sunday before last by posting a sign up sheet in grid-form. it was all filled out within 30 minutes after the last service that sunday, with the exception of 4 slots which I filled myself. it included the following tasks:

2 screeners for each night – 5:30 to 6:00 PM at the Depot. we ask people to show us their pockets and their bags to see if there is any contraband. that would include at least drugs, alcohol, weapons. so far nobody has carried any such items. we also screen for sobriety (or a reasonable facsimile thereof – meaning that if in my judgment a person, though under the influence, will behave herself, she can be admitted with the understanding that if she misbehaves, she must leave (not just for the night – but for the rest of the winter). so far this hasn’t happend – though in Chad’s week, one person did come close.

entry into the parish hall. guests make their beds and secure their belongings

Dinner server(s): 6:30 PM dinner is served. we hold hands in a circle to say grace – and I have asks the cooks for the evening to say the grace as a way of thanking them for providing the evening’s food. (for our poorer members I have also offered to pay for the groceries is necessary – so far only one person has needed to accept that offer – I found it to be a blessing to her that she could contribute her offering of time and talent)

Then follow games, movies, homework, etc until lights out at 10:00. about half the guests go right to sleep after dinner, some stay up for games and/or movies.

Bag lunch volunteer to make lunches for guests. we had our chaperones call our lunch person, who then made lunches that night and brought them in either later that night or the next morning.

Breakfast team has breakfast ready at 6:00 AM.

Guests depart at 7:00 AM.

laundry volunteers wash sheets and blankets. we’re doing that 3 times a week. Bcause our guests dont have shower facilities available to them, this needs to be done on a regular basis.

All supplies are with the program. they include: air mattresses, air pumps, blankets, sheets, pillows, towels, games, records on guests. we have had a minimum of 4 guests and a max of 8.

Because we are within walking distance of the depot, we didn’t need to provide transportation to and from the site. that may be a consideration for you.

Please volunteer to take a week. City on the Hill Church and Mountain View are each taking a turn, using St. Stephen’s, as they don’t have facilities of their own. Our facility will be cold sometime after Christmas, as the boiler will be replaced at that time. So it’s critical that some of you do this especially then. I have found it to be a great blessing to our church – the people who have helped have been enriched by the experience. the youngest helper has been 8 – the oldest 85. The tasks are broken down in such a way that anyone and everyone can do something.

If I were to preach on this theme now, I might develop more around an inkeeper’s theme, wondering if there’s room enough for Jesus in our inn.

Please consider this carefully. This ministry is more than any one of us can do – but together, each of us taking a turn, it can be done, I think, rather easily.

Couldn’t help but think of the CEO’s of the big 3 automakers, jostling their way into the halls of congress…

Like rams butting others out of the way, jostling with flank and shoulder

Problem was, they were a little late – seeing as how the other Alpha-Males had already come to and gone from the Federal trough.

Wouldn’t surprise me if down the road, as the corporate down-sizing continues, that those at the top will congratulate themselves for reducing operating costs, jostling aside those who would otherwise be employed.  And then reward themselves with big, fat bonuses.

And I think of Alan Greenspan’s testimony before congress, claiming he didn’t think a lot of regulating was necessary, because he didn’t think bank CEOs would be so greedy as to damage the companies they headed.

But the mentality of thinking – I’ve got mine – and what happens after that doesn’t matter –

Well – according to Ezekiel – God’ fed up with that kind of behavior

As for the fat sheep – they’re done – that’s it –

The pork barrel’s sprung a leak – and now all there is – is one big mess to clean up.

But before I wander any further astray – let me point out that Jesus is even more demanding than Ezekiel –

Ezekiel blasts the powerful, who do damage to the weak.  Jesus says it’s just as bad to ignore them – to do nothing.

I think that for us – this is more to the point.

Not many of us here are powerful enough to butt others out of our way, or to make decisions which affect the lives of more than a few.  But all of us can look the other way, can pretend someone doesn’t exist, can dismiss people.  Everybody here is powerful enough to do NOTHING.

And then the king will answer them and say:

You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.

And they will say:

`Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?

And he might well say: I was standing in line yesterday morning waiting for my turkey.  I’ll be sleeping in my car tonight.  I tried to get some gas money so a friend could drive me to a shelter in Warrenton – I’m trying to keep my family together, even though the power’s about to be turned off.

I’m not saying Christ was in any one of those people I met yesterday – but I’m also not saying he wasn’t.  I don’t know – any more than the sheep or the goats in this am’s gospel knew.

Knowing wasn’t the point – serving the least of the brethren was.

Which brings me a yet another practical application of today’s Gospel.

A new need arising
More and more people asking for help
Not enough money to keep the power on
I could easily give away $1000 a week – and it still might not be enough
Don’t have it, either.

But I thought to myself – I do have buildings that need to be heated
Why can’t they have people in them?
