There was a wonderful time of fellowship, prayer and worship during yesterday’s evening National Day of Prayer event held at the Culpeper United Methodist Church. Vertical Worship led the attendees in worship through their music and a number of people participated in the service. Pastor Randy Orndorff opened up the evening in prayer, Carolyn Kebede led in the Call to Worship, and Fran Kimball led everyone in a Prayer of Confession.

Virginia Morton read Jeremiah 17:5-8:

“Thus says the Lord: ‘Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart departs from the Lord. For he shall be like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see when good comes, but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land which is not inhabited.’

‘Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is the Lord. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, which spreads out its roots by the river, and will not fear when heat comes; but its leaf will be green, and will not be anxious in the year of drought, nor will cease from yielding fruit.’”

Pastor Adam Meisberger delivering the sermon.

The sermon: “God’s Transformational Blessing for Our Nation Starts with You” was delivered by Adam Meisberger, Pastor at Bethel Baptist Church. Pastor Meisberger said that there are only two types of people in this world and throughout eternity. There is only one thing that divides all of humanity. Is the person’s trust and confidence and assurance and faith in the Lord?

Our only concern should be: Where is our confidence? If our confidence is not in the Lord, we will not be blessed by Him. Where is our nation’s confidence? Christians cannot point their fingers of blame at our government, at our media, or at anyone else. Christians also are to blame for our nation’s direction. We must take the plank out of our own eyes before we can take the speck out of someone else’s eye.

A Christian must ask this very serious question: Is his/her sole confidence in his/her life the Lord God Almighty?

If you lost your house tomorrow, would you still have confidence in Him? If your bank accounts were suddenly gone, would you still have confidence in Him? If you had no health insurance, would you still have confidence in Him?

For revival to spread throughout our country, so that our country can once again be a “Nation under God,” Christians must be entirely sold out to Christ. Our sole confidence must be in the Lord God Almighty!

To hear Pastor Meisberger’s message in its entirety, click here.

The evening concluded with prayers for our Government, Military, Education, Families, Businesses, Media and Church by Marsha Fishbaugh, Pastor Ludwell Brown, Laura Burt, Art Fellows, Mike Garrett, Jithendra Manne and Ed Lyons, respectively.

Special thanks to Maddie Wheeler, George Bowles, Doug & Anne Farmer, Darlene Neff, Troy Smith, Steve Buchanan, and Tim Smith who led us in prayer for our country’s education, church, family, government, military, media and businesses, respectively.

Dave Wheatley led us in songs of worship, and Pastor Baker Rigg of Church on the Rise encouraged us to truly know God more intimately. Baker said the U.S. is at a critical juncture. To truly remain a nation under God, we will need a full-scale revival. To have that, we must be obedient to Jesus’ teaching to love the Lord our God with all of our heart, soul, strength and mind, and to love others as ourselves.

Wouldn’t it be great if a revival broke out in Culpeper that spread across this nation?

Yes, Pastor Rigg, we agree that it would indeed!

The Culpeper County Ministerial Association would like to invite you to attend any or all of the 61st Annual National Day of Prayer events in Culpeper on Thursday, May 3, 2012. This year’s theme is “One Nation under God”, which is based on Psalm 33:12 -

“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.”

The National Day of Prayer is a vital part of our heritage. Since the first call to prayer in 1775, when the Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in forming a nation, the call to prayer has continued through history, including President Lincoln’s proclamation of a day of “humiliation, fasting, and prayer” in 1863. In 1962, a joint resolution by Congress, signed by President Truman, declared an annual, national day of prayer. In 1988, the law was amended and signed by President Ronald Reagan, permanently setting the day as the first Thursday of every May.

As we seek to remain a nation under God, let us call out to Him with a unified voice. There are a number of events planned in the Culpeper area.

Noon to 1 PM at the Culpeper Courthouse Lawn, located off of West Davis Street, across from the Culpeper Fire Department. Rain location: Culpeper Presbyterian Church on Main Street next to the US Post Office. Contact Ed Lyons at (540) 829-5353 for more details.

7:00 – 8:30 PM at the Culpeper United Methodist Church in their sanctuary. Contact Fran Kimball (540) 937-7298 for more details.

Wednesday, May 2nd – Culpeper County Public School’s Rize-Up Club is hosting a National Day of Prayer event in the Culpeper Middle School forum from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. This is a student-led prayer event. Contact Jon Morton at (540) 498-3333.

This year’s annual Community Thanksgiving Service, sponsored by the Culpeper Ministerial Association, is an invitation for all citizens in and around Culpeper to join together, thanking God for everyday blessings that are evident all around us.

This year Rear Admiral United States Navy (Ret.) Barry C. Black. Black, the 62nd Chaplain of the United States Senate, is paying a visit to Culpeper to deliver the message at the Annual Community Thanksgiving Service being held at Culpeper Baptist Church Nov. 22 at 7 p.m.

Black, who served as Chaplain for the U.S. Navy for 27 years, is the first black man to hold the office of Chaplain for the U.S. Senate. His message, titled “The Habit of Thanksgiving”, is the meat of the community service.

“The thought I want to leave people with is that we should strive to cultivate a heart of thanksgiving,” Black said.

Raised in a poor Baltimore neighborhood, Black grew up with a strong faith. In a recent interview with Chris Wallace on Fox News, Black recalls how his mother gave him and his siblings five cents for each verse of scripture they could recite. It didn’t take long before he memorized the whole book of Genesis.

Opening the Senate with prayer every day, Black runs four Bible studies and is a pastor to Senators, staff and families, a group encompassing 7,000 people. He doesn’t take his responsibilities lightly, saying in his Fox interview that, “I never walk into this building [U.S. Capitol] without a sense of wonder and without a sense that this was my destiny.”

Nancy Sharman, organizer of this year’s service, said Black is amazing. “His voice and articulation – he’s mesmerizing. To get him out of Washington is awesome; you don’t get him out of Washington,” she said.

“A guest speaker, such as Black, really highlights the importance of Thanksgiving to our Nation,” said Wayne Duncan who is assisting with the plans for this year’s service.

Elected officials will be in attendance, “as we are saying thank you to our public officials and honoring them,” said Duncan.

“This isn’t about us,” said Sharman. “It’s about the community. It’s our invitation to come together.”

Harbor Lights is providing music throughout the service. The Hochstetler family, residing in Madison County, comprises the a cappella group of nine. Junior Marine Corps ROTC, from EVHS, will be presenting and retiring the colors for the service.

With a focus of encouraging folks of all denominations to come together for Thanksgiving, this community service provides that opportunity.

“People should seize the opportunity to come together to give thanks. It can produce greater unity,” said Black of Culpeper’s Thanksgiving service.

Various churches throughout Culpeper are congregating together during the season of Lent and an invitation is being extended to the community to join them.

For six Sundays, beginning February 21, 2010, services will be held at different churches each week. The services will be conducted in the tradition of the host church, with a guest pastor providing the message.

The focus for the six week Lenten season will be the Sermon on the Mount. Scriptures will focus on the book of Matthew, chapters 5-7.

Local ministers in Culpeper are excited about this Lenten opportunity. Charlene Phillips, past President of the Culpeper Ministerial Association, encourages participation from all churches saying, “If we all participate, as pastors, then it will be successful.”

The idea for a community Lenten service was shared at the December 2009 ministerial meeting, by Dan McDowell. Having recently moved to Culpeper from Ohio, McDowell attended similar services on Sunday nights there. “It helps others understand other traditions and worship-style varieties of different churches,” he says adding, “It really brings the community together allowing everyone to experience different flavors of different churches.”

McDowell and Josh Orndorff, intern at Culpeper United Methodist Church, are have finalized the schedule of church locations and guest ministers.
